Whilst lots of folks out there couldn’t wait to ditch the face masks, there was an equal amount of people who were clinging on to their masks for dear life and it wasn’t all related to safety and the prevention of spreading germs. Nope. It’s far more shallow than that. Turns out many people wanted to keep the masks because it actually made them feel more desirable to their desired sex partner.
Not only did it make them feel more desirable, it actually made them more desirable, at
least according to a Welsh study conducted in 2021. The recent study found that men who wore a medical mask were considered way more attractive than men who didn’t wear a mask at all. Also, regular cloth masks don’t count so you can forget about your skull and Pokémon print masks.
A separate Japanese study found that it wasn’t only men who became instantly more attractive when wearing a mask. Women’s faces were also rated more attractive and more healthy with the presence of a mask. I guess with all the crap we’ve been dealt over the past few years, it’s kind of refreshing to know we can at least gain a few points on the attractive scale so…silver linings I guess.
Dr Michael Lewis from Cardiff University’s school of psychology and an expert in faces, examines the reason as to why we now prefer a face partially covered by a disposable-type surgical mask. Studies show that pre-pandemic, hardly anyone found surgical masks attractive as they were linked to disease. However, fast forward to 2021/2022, it’s post pandemic and we’re loving the masked look. We can’t get enough of a pretty face in a mask. Dr Lewis summed up his findings:
“The current research shows the pandemic has changed our psychology in how we perceive the wearers of masks. When we see someone wearing a mask we no longer think ‘that person has a disease, I need to stay away’. This relates to evolutionary psychology and why we select the partners we do. Previously any cues to disease would be a big turn off. Now we can observe a shift in our psychology such that face masks are no longer acting as a contamination cue.”
Interesting. It just goes to show how our environment can shape our sex preferences.
