As working from home continues to be the ‘new normal’ for many of us, the time we spend wearing pyjamas has grown exponentially with comfort and coziness taking precedence over the style and support of ‘outdoor’ clothes. As a result of this increase in the favouring bed wear, a debate has arisen, particularly among women that seems to have divided popular opinion…should you wear pants with your pyjamas?
In a recent post on The Daily Mail the point is argued on both sides.
Arguing the point against is Sophia Money-Coutts who says the only excuse for wearing no pants under your pyjamas is if they happen to be freshly washed every single night and likens any nightly repeats of commando style pyjama wearing to being the equivalent of wearing the same pair of dirty undies over and over again, ‘it’s unacceptable’ she says, ‘…you should be in prison. Life sentence’.
She goes on to say that a big pair of breathable cotton pants is preferable to the discomfort of a pair of polyester pyjama shorts and prevents any riding up the bum that may occur as well as keeping you prepared in case an intruder comes a prowling in the middle of the night . Some may argue that Money-Coutt’s somewhat conservative views on pyjama wearing customs might be on the overly cautious side. However she does admit that some of these opinions may have stemmed from her time spent in boarding school. Shared dorm situations can be a stressful and steep learning curve.

Arguing on the side of panty-less pyjama wearing is Marion McGilvary. She’s all about the freedom saying there’s no need to wear any other layers, ‘I feel pants and pyjamas are akin to bathing in your leggings. I am aghast.’
McGilvary argues that there’s no need for an extra layer of cotton between yourself and the bed, that the need to ‘wrap up’ is unnecessary compared with the sheer comfort level that goes with casting off ‘the nip of elastic, the torture of seams and the itch of lace.’ After all if it’s only yourself whose going to see it, why not maximize comfortability?
