Years ago it would have been unheard of to see porn in a mainstream movie. You might say “but I’ve seen plenty of porn in films” and perhaps so, but not all of them are decent, well revered movies that have a good plot and story line. I’m certainly not talking about those straight-to-dvd, shock value kind of films with tonnes of gratuitous sex.
The film we are focussing on today is Red Rocket. It is a dark comedy released back in 2021, directed by Sean Baker, from a screenplay co-written by Chris Bergoch. Listen to Director Sean Baker talk about the film on the Pornhub podcast. The leading actors on the film are Suzanna Son and Simon Rex. Rex had previously stared in the sitcom ‘Cuts’ alongside future Mrs Prince Harry, Megan Marckle and even refused a £70,000 offer from a British tabloid to claim that he’d slept with her. The plot of the film follows a porn star (Simon Rex) who returns to his hometown and falls for an adolescent girl (Suzanna Son). Here’s the official synopsis on IMDB:
Finding himself down and out in Los Angeles, ex porn star Mikey Saber decides to crawl back to his hometown of Texas City, Texas, where his estranged wife and mother-in-law are living. Just as this dysfunctional family seems to be making things work, Mikey meets a young woman named Strawberry working the cash register at a local doughnut shop. He falls right back into his old habits.
Red Rocket premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and received praise from critics as well as a bunch of award nominations. The National Board of Review even listed it as one of the top ten films of the year. Red Rocket holds a 7.2/10 rating on IMDB.

“Sometimes movies come along … that seem like they are documentaries … that have people in them, that … well it doesn’t feel like the actors are acting in this. Which is saying quite something – in a good sense!
It is tough to not like the main character here – but he really is only looking out for himself.
Now there is quite some nudity in this, but even though there is also a lot of sex talk, this is not meant to arouse or titilate people. It is just showing the side of the character … and society of course. How we can fall for the wrong people … or let them drag you down too.”
Red Rocket definitely sounds like it’s worth a watch.
This isn’t the only porn related film to hit the big screens in recent months. There seems to be a spate of them, with gory slasher film, ‘X’ released in March which sees the cast and crew of a porn film pitch up to shoot their latest XXX movie in an elderly couple’s rural Texas cabin only to find themselves hunted by a deranged killer.
Even Dame Emma Thompson is getting in on the act. She recently spoke about going naked in her new film she is starring in, the film is called, ‘Good Luck To You Leo Grande‘ in which she plays a widow who has never had an orgasm until she hires an escort.
