Talk of live babeshow addiction was first ramped up in the wake of a high profile media story, in which a babe channel fan ran up a debt of over ninety grand, then told his woes to a newspaper as part of a bid to get the debt completely written off. The reality of the story was pretty clear. A middle-aged man, who should have had a lot more sense, spent a fortune he didn’t have on premium rate chat calls, naïvely taking standard babe channel sales patter at face value and believing that various TV babes had a genuine interest in him. But part of the subtext was that the fan had actually become addicted to babeshows, and out of this sprang a number of other claims, by fans, that they too were suffering from a ‘babeshow addiction’.

At a time when the babeshows themselves really weren’t providing much to talk about, the idea of babeshow addiction created a debate. But is this ‘babeshow addiction’ actually a thing? Can it really exist? And if not, why not?…

WHAT ARE THE FANS ACTUALLY ‘ADDICTED’ TO?

The first problem with so-called babeshow addictions is that even if you prove the addiction is real, you can’t with any conviction say it’s babeshows that the fans are addicted to. Some men, for instance, appear to spend virtually their whole lives sending messages to babes and/or other TV and media personalities on Twitter. But no one would try to suggest that it’s Twitter these fans are addicted to, or blame Twitter for the fans’ behaviour. If you took away the celebrities, the fans just wouldn’t use the site. The site has no value to them in itself. Their obsession is not with Twitter. It’s with celebrities.

If the fans are addicted to anything at all, it’s attention, and that works completely independently of individual websites. Attention-seekers will go wherever the attention is. Remove Twitter from the equation and they’ll spend their lives on Facebook, or Instagram, or wherever else the celebs migrate in order to maintain their public profiles.

The same applies with babeshows. It’s not the actual programmes the fans are obsessed with. Most couldn’t care less about the history or background of the channels, the detail of how they work, or any of the reality behind the product. Indeed it’s the very fact that some fans pay absolutely no attention whatsoever to the mechanics and workings of the channels that sees them overlooking key, onscreen stipulations – like “This is a fantasy service”, or “This is an advertisement”.

So the only thing these so-called ‘addicts’ are really obsessed with is glamorous women who wear very skimpy clothes, or less. All they want is to connect with the women, and once again, they’ll go wherever they need to go to get their fix. If, as was suggested in the debate about ‘babeshow addiction’, action was taken against the channels, the women would still be completely free to continue offering similar services to the same fans, privately.

Blaming babe channels for the fact that some men are pathologically programmed to buy attention from women would solve absolutely nothing. The same guys would still end up giving the same money to the same girls. Besides which, I don’t think the public in general see any problem with the idea of blokes being made to pay for the fact that they’re irrepressible womanisers – provided the terms of the service are made clear. And the terms are clear. This is not like gambling, where it’s part of the deal that you might win. It’s 100% ingrained in the babeshow Terms and Conditions that the service is only fantasy, and the money is not a stake in winning a girlfriend.

IS THE ‘ADDICTION’ EVEN AN ADDICTION?

But the real issue is whether or not ‘babeshow addiction’ can be categorised as an addiction in the first place.

An addiction is something you can’t stop. Something you’ll still do even if you fully recognise that it’s harming, or even killing you. But this doesn’t fit the picture of ‘babeshow addiction’ at all. With ‘babeshow addiction’, the guys can stop, and indeed do stop, abruptly, just as soon as they realise that they forgot to read the terms and conditions, and that actually, the girls they’re spending a fortune trying to impress are simply doing a job – providing a commercial service, which terminates as soon as the customer stops paying. At that point, the whole thing is instantly over…

“Ah, so I’m NOT bankrolling a relationship here… These babes DON’T think I’m the greatest guy in the world and want to hook up with me! They’re entertainers. Not my future wife.”

If this was an addiction, that epiphany would not make a scrap of difference. An alcoholic can lose his/her job, friends and partner and end up in hospital in a life-threatening situation, and yet still continue drinking. The negative consequences and horrendous damage don’t stop the craving. That’s addiction. But simply spending a lot of time doing something, or spending a lot of money on it does not constitute addiction, and certainly, if the individual is able to stop at the first sign that their campaign is unproductive, there’s absolutely no way the word ‘addict’ can be applied.

So, obsessed, maybe. But addicted, no. Babeshow addiction. It’s not a thing.
